구혜선의 감독데뷔작 <요술>에서 소심한 성격의 첼리스트 명진을 연기했다. 명진은 당신의 외모적 특성을 최대한 반영한 영화라는 생각이 든다. 배우 입장에서는 편하게 연기할 수 있어서 좋은 반면, 내가 가지고 있는 모습과 다른 걸 보여주고 싶은 욕망도 있었을 것 같다.
You played a shy cellist MyungJin in Ku Hye Sun’s directorial debut
. The movie truly seems to have emphasized the best qualities of your outward appearance. On the one hand, you felt that acting was made comfortable, but you also felt the desire to show the different side of you.
이전에는 외모적인 장점을 살릴 수 있는 작품이 없었다. 히키코모리로 나온 <저수지에서 건진 치타>에서는 요상한 가발을 쓰고 다녔고, <은하해방전선>에서는 수다스러운 감독 지망생을 연기했으니까. 드라마는 말할 것도 없고 말이야. 그런 면에서 <요술>은 외적인 면에서 가장 나다운 작품이었다. 특히 연출이 배우출신이다 보니, 연기자의 입장을 너무 잘 이해해 줬다. “지규씨 어떤 앵글을 가장 잘 받죠?” 등등 내 장점을 잘 활용할 수 있게끔 해줘서 현장이 너무 즐거웠다.
In the past, I have had no projects that brought out the best of my outward appearance. I had to wear a weird wig as Hikikomori in . I acted as a gossipy/chatty director-want-to-be in . I don’t have to explain to you about the dramas that I was in. In , I was most like myself. Since the director is an actor herself, she truly empathized with the actors. She would ask me things like, “jiGyu-ssi, which angle gives your best shot?” She made the work environment very enjoyable by making the best use of my positive qualities.
나를 믿어주는 연출가를 만났으니, 힘이 많이 났겠다.
You must have felt empowered by meeting a director who believed in you.
정말 그랬다. 배우에게 도움을 줄 수 있는 부분을 너무 잘 알고 있는 연출자였다. <요술>이 많은 관객을 만나진 못했지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 구혜선이라는 사람과 함께 작업했다는 사실에 뿌듯하다. 사실 그녀에 대한 어떤 편견들이 있었는데, 함께 작업하면서 그 편견들이 모두 사라졌다. 많은 사람들은 본인이 어떠한 준비를 완벽하게 해야지만 뭔가를 할 수 있다고 생각한다. 정작 원하는 게 언제 완성될지도 모르면서. 그런데 내가 만난 구혜선이라는 사람은 당돌하고 당당했다. 이 사람은 일단 도전한다. 누군가에게 보여주고 싶어서가 아니라, 본인이 정말로 원해서. 나에게 없는 모습을 보면서 많은 걸 느꼈다.
It really was so. She is a director who knows how to help the actors really well. Even though did not have much viewership, I am very happy that I had the chance to work with a person like Goo HyeSun. Actually, I did have lots of prejudices about her. However, after having worked with her, all those prejudices disappeared. Most of us think that we have to be perfectly prepared to start doing something, even though we have no idea when that will be. However, the GHS that I met is IRREVERENT and SPUNKY. She just takes the challenge. It is not because she wants to show off something to someone. It is because she truly desires it for herself. Reflecting on what I lack, I really learned/felt a great deal.
